At the Lib Dems Autumn conference in 2009 I called for correction of a party policy paper ('Are we being served?') that incorrectly stated the Operating and Financial Review (OFR) was still in place. The statutory OFR had been repealed in December 2005. It is little surprise the party policy-makers had got confused as to where things stood in UK corporate
Whilst I am of course delighted at news this week that Brentford appears to be leading the way nationally in corporate community investment, the financial crisis has thrown up real uncertainties over the past few years as to how embedded responsible leadership is in the business community, particularly the financial sector. As a candidate I experienced first hand ho… Continue

A number of people have written to me in the past few days expressing concerns about a Lib Dem/ Con coalition.
Some of you asked me to communicate on these concerns at the highest levels of the party, which I did. I share your anxieties. Political campaigning for the Lib Dems (often against the Conservatives) over the past decade has cost me personally many tens of thousands of pounds.
Some of you expressed concerns about Nick Clegg ha
As the dust settles on the election I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the phenomenal support you have given me and the Liberal Democrats over the past few months. Too many messages have come in by phone, e-mail, text and twitter in the past 48hrs for me to be able to respond individually, but please know that your support and good wishes for the future mean an awful lot to me. For close family it has been a particularly testing time – thank you for your patience, love and s
Over the past few weeks our greatest challenge has been coping with the surge in interest in the party and new volunteers coming forward - that's of course a great position to be in, but has slowed down the frequency of updates to this site.
New supporters have provided homes for some of our biggest ever banners in both Osterley and Gunnersbury (see below). Hopefully you've spotted them whilst driving down the Great West Road or going into Chiswick.
When I first ran for Parliament in 2005 the issue of the poor service at Turnham Green Tube was one of the key local concerns raised with me by Chiswick residents. My Freedom of Information request at the time simply yielded a litany of excuses. Five years on and the problem remains unsolved by the incumbent
The long-standing practice known as ‘The Cranford Agreement’ has avoided easterly departures off the northern runway over Cranford, wherever possible. It means that when the airport is operating on easterlies, most departures use the southern runway and arrivals generally use the northern runway. Alternation is not therefore used on easterly operations.
Stemming from an undertaking given at a public meeting in 1952, the Agreement was designed to protect the residents of Cranford, clo… Continue

In the past few week's we've had hot air from our Labour MP which clearly really frustrated the Tory Leader of Hounslow Council. I have some sympathy with his view. With just three days until our Budget meeting for the 2010/11 we need solutions, not more waffle.
Worrying news in this press release from Independent campaign group 'London Health Emergency'. I will be interested to read the full NW London document...
Last Tuesday evening I attended the Chiswick local area committee for the first time as an observer. As a Group Leader it is useful to maintain and develop an understanding of how local democracy is working across the borough.
An old friend of mine, based in the Dominican Republic, has just come back from a week-long assessment to design post-emergency recovery/development projects in Haiti. I thought you might find his insights of interest. He says: "...[we] spent a few days in Port-au-Prince ...We saw the damage and talked to the Haitian people and I must say it was one of the loveliest experiences of my life. It was amazing to see so many people doing so much great work and with such energy and spirit, alwa
Some of you may remember that last Summer I was encouraging local people to feedback through TakeBackPowerHounslow.org on the Sustainable Communities Act. Unfortunately Hounslow did not consult local people and get local ideas in before the "wave one" deadline. However a commitment was ma
Just before Christmas the battle for a fair deal for residents over Mogden entered its latest phase as three Abatement notices were finally issued. This was a key milestone in the battle for better treatment of local residents by Thames Water. MRAG and Cllr Jon Hardy are to be congratulated in their persistence. It was good to see Jon get the recognition he deserves in the Hounslow & Brentford Times as
The Council's education department currently advise that "Hounslow’s current predictions show that for September 2010, the council needs to plan for 245 new reception class places, or eight additional classes
The League Against Cruel Sports (www.league.org.uk) is compiling a database of the position of parliamentary candidates of all main parties in relation to repeal of the Hunting Act. They emailed me today asking whether if elected to parliament and the opportunity arose, I would vote in favour of repeal of the Hunting Act?
By reply I explained that despite being a pescatarian and aspiring vegetarian (ie not pro consuming meat for ethical and environmental reasons), I am very doubtful about the e… Continue
I would very much agree with Mike Smithson's and Mark Littlewood's postings that the Party has been slow to admit that Afghanistan is unwinnable. Hounslow Liberal Democrats has submitted motions twice this year to Conference Commi… Continue
In April 2009 I wrote to Jonathan Porrit (Forum for the Future) and Paul King (UK Green Building Council) who are both advisors/ members to the Igloo Socially Responsible Investment Committee regarding concerns an ISIS project in Brentford. Igloo are major investors in ISIS and are in part owned by The Environment Agency Pension Fund.
Having listened to (hopefully!) all the issues raised on internet forums and meetings, visited the museum the week before last, and then spoken to Richard Gill and James Wisdom here is a summary of my views and top concerns....

The work of the two Councils over the past year is to be broadly welcomed. After decades of inaction a comprehensive vision for the park has been brought together by nationally recognised consultants, backed up by the local appointed Development Mana… Continue
