Reflections on environmental sustainability and social entrepreneurship
I have long called for
the inherited debt of NHS Hounslow and the West Middlesex hospital
to be written off - an idea that NHS Hounslow's board recently got
behind and successfully negotiated. This will give managers a clean
slate helping them concentrate fully on patient care.
Former local MP Ann Keen supported a 'PFI' funding model for the new West Middlesex hospital building. As a House of Commons select committee report (2002/3) evidences this was a raw deal for taxpayers and, like so many PFI deals, adds to the debt burden on current and future generations.
Munira Wilson and I - backed by Vince Cable MP, whose constituents also rely on the West Middlesex hospital - launched a petition in 2010 calling on the Department of Health and NHS London to give our local health service a fair share of funding and protect the West Middlesex hospital from any potential of its A&E or maternity department.
I am personally very concerned about the Coalition Government's current proposals for further radical reform of the NHS with a complete shift to GP commissioning. I hope this will be exposed to extensive piloting first, before being given a wider roll out, or the consequences could be very costly.
