Education and skills

As a beneficiary myself, I have always believed we must create a top class education system which gives everybody the best start in life, the best chance to succeed in work and the best opportunity to develop as individuals. This is why I support the abolition of all undergraduate university tuition fees.

Too many children are still leaving school without the knowledge and skills to be successful. That's why I am a strong supporter of Education Business Partnerships, as well as the development of many more apprenticeship opportunities.

Finding a good school is a struggle, lessons don’t always stretch the brightest or support those who need more help, and classes are often too big for teachers to control. I voiced my disappointment that the process that led to decisions on the 2008/9 primary school expansions in Hounslow Borough did not involve greater consultation and use of democratic structures. In future such significant decisions must involve parents and local councillors far more.

Today - along with the need to expand secondary school provision in Brentford - my real concern is what seems like an ideologically driven push at a national level for more academies and "free schools".
