Andrew is committed to creating a top class education system which gives everybody the best start in life, the best chance to succeed in work and the best opportunity to develop as individuals. This is why Andrew supports the abolition of all tuition fees, as the Lib Dems ensured was delivered in Scotland. Furthermore, as the government's £1bn Child Trust Fund is expensive, unnecessary and delivers few real benefits, the Lib Dems will instead use this money to improve early years support. This means reducing class sizes for the youngest children and setting up Early Years Centres to provide better health, education, social services and family support for every child - when it counts.
Too many children are still leaving school without the knowledge and skills to be successful. That's why Andrew is a strong supporter of Hounslow's Education Business Partnership, as well as the development of apprenticeships in the borough. Finding a good school is a struggle, lessons don’t always stretch the brightest or support those who need more help, and classes are often too big for teachers to control. Hounslow Liberal Democrats were disappointed by the process that led to decisions on recent primary school expansions in the borough did not involve greater consultation and use of democratic structures.
In future such significant decisions must involve parents and local councillors far more. Andrew has called on Hounslow’s Director of Education to improve local consultation and involvement in decisions around any further expansion of primary schools and the development of proposals for a secondary school. He is currently supporting the search for a site for a new secondary school in the area.
